Hurricane Melissa is the most powerful storm to strike Jamaica since records began. The Category 5 hurricane brought sustained winds of 175 miles per hour and storm surges reaching 13 feet, causing catastrophic damage to homes, schools, and hospitals. As Jamaica’s Prime Minister shared, few buildings in the storm’s direct path could withstand such force. The World Meteorological Organization has described the situation as devastating. The storm has also caused widespread destruction across Haiti and Cuba, impacting countless lives and livelihoods.
