Hurricane Francine strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane as it traveled through the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico toward southern Louisiana. WCK Teams assembled to prepare hundreds of sandwiches hours before the storm hit so they’d be ready to take scouting for food and water needs in communities once it was safe. Several WCK Chef Corps members were also on standby to support with warm meals if the storm caused more widespread damage.
Four foot storm surges left nearly 300 homes flooded and hurricane-force winds left hundreds of thousands without power. Our teams were able to meet immediate needs with the prepared sandwiches and cases of clean water. During the following days, we used our new Rapid Relief Field Kitchen, a state-of-the-art vehicle capable of cooking thousands of meals, to cook hot meals for impacted residents.
